The Documentary Project

Create a multimedia presentation about some aspect of US History from the first semester. It doesn't have to be something that we covered in class, but something from that time period. It should be a self-standing project, so a movie is ideal. If you do a PowerPoint show, plan on saving it as a movie as well.

Although not every project will follow this same schedule, here is a basic outline for how to do it:

1. Select a topic.

2. Do some research.
Find the information that you want to share in your movie. Look especially for primary sources and expert secondary sources. Wikipedia is a good place to start, but don't stop there.
3. Write a script, or what you say during your movie. Chunk it up into small topics.
Make sure you cover the subject and give enough detail to make your movie informative. Your script may need to change based on the images and video that you find.
4. Locate or create images and video.
More is better because you will want to change images often and you may decide not to use all that you find. Think of what you want to show. For example, a video clip of an older man walking down the street might work for your movie, even if it isn't the exact person you are talking about.
5. Record the audio.
Images are generally timed to fit with the audio. You might use Audacity, which is a great recording and audio editing tool.
6. Put the movie together.
Use MovieMaker or some other tool to build the movie.
7. Show off your movie.
Show friends and others the movie and get their feedback. You might improve the movie based on their comments, especially if you show it off early and often.
